After reading a chapter in the Bible, have you ever wondered, “Is that really true?” We would like to think that at some point in our lives as followers of Jesus we will never question the way he works in our lives. The hard truth, however, is that on this side of eternity, we’re always going to struggle with doubts. Those doubts might be about the Bible, or what we are going through, or a command we are to follow, but skepticism is part of the human condition – at least for now.
There are a whole lot of doubters in the Bible. Some worked through their doubts, and some didn’t. The most well-known doubter was a disciple of Jesus, Thomas. His skepticism about the resurrection of Jesus was so strong that it has earned him the nickname “Doubting Thomas”.
The issue is not that we have doubts, but what we do with them. Some repress their misgivings and pretend they don’t exist. That doesn’t work. Others give in to their doubts and give up on their relationship with Jesus. That is tragic. Is there a middle road? The story of Thomas and how Jesus dealt with him is a good starting point. No, Jesus probably isn’t going to appear to you the way he did to Thomas, but that isn’t the only way to resolve doubts. If you’re stuck on some doubts about Jesus but haven’t really made an attempt to deal with them in any productive way, join us for our Sunday morning worship service. Your questions might not all be answered, but you will at least have a framework to start getting those answers.
