An old man thinking about retirement is jolted out of his pleasant dreams to go on a mission few young people would accept. He’s told to leave his home for a destination to be determined. He’s promised that he will be a father even though he is 75 and has no children. He’s told his legacy will be known throughout the earth. Who would believe such things? A man named Abraham did. He was absolutely convinced that God had spoken to him, giving Abraham the opportunity to be a part of the most fantastic rescue mission in human history.
God took the initiative in reaching out to Abraham. He executed the plan. He provided for Abraham all that he needed. But God did ask Abraham for one thing: his trust. Most of us believe God needs something from us, so we stubbornly hold on to the idea that if we do good things, we can bargain with God so he gives us what we want. Abraham learned differently. He realized all he could do was believe what God said and then trust those words by doing what God told him.
Through Abraham, God built a nation – Israel. Over the years, God used the people of Israel as his conduit to the human race, culminating with God’s invasion of his planet in the person of Jesus Christ. God came not to bargain with us, but to rescue us. He completes every detail of that plan and then asks, “Will you believe me? Will you trust me?”
Four thousand years ago Abraham answered, “Yes, Lord, I trust you.” How will you respond to God’s plan?
