Invest in What Lasts

Invest in What Lasts

“It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest most uninteresting person you can talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree helping each other to one or the other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all of our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations - these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit - immortal horrors or everlasting splendors.” CS Lewis Weight of Glory

If you were reading fast or were multi-tasking, read the paragraph above one more time – it’s that important.

Have you ever seriously thought about the people you live, work and play with as immortals? That’s exactly what Jesus said, but have you ever thought of the significance of being immortal this way? We lay awake at night wondering about our careers, our investments, our homes and our cars. How often do we do the same meditating on where our loved ones will spend eternity and what our influence on their destiny will be.

When we say our prayers this evening, let’s ask God to help us see that there are no ordinary people. Everyone we met during the past day will spend forever either with God or apart from Him. Let’s ask the Lord, “Did my words and actions help those people to walk toward You, Lord, or away from You?”

And when we say our prayers tomorrow morning, let’s ask God to help us to see everyone we meet as individuals He wants to be in heaven and our privilege of joining Him in leading those people to that end. Invest in what lasts! Invest in people! Be a disciple maker.
