What a question! And it is a question which is not only on the minds of people, but also their lips. Many are wondering out loud, “If the quality of my life is so bad, why go on? Isn’t it better just to end it all?” It isn’t a new question. Shakespeare’s character Hamlet asked the very same thing in the famous monologue, “To be, or not to be, that is the question?”
As strange as it may seem, a more important question might be, “Is personal happiness the most important part of human life?” For as weird as it sounds, it’s a good question, especially since most of us have so much difficulty figuring out what happiness is. For many, happiness is just an elusive dream we chase but never really catch.
To the first question, “Is my life worth living, if I’m not happy?” the resurrection of Jesus Christ emphatically and positively shouts, “YES! YOUR LIFE IS ABSOLUTELY WORTH LIVING!!!” Now this is going to sound philosophical, but it’s totally practical. Living to be happy is based on ever changing emotions. The resurrection of Jesus takes our life goals and transfers them from the emotional to the factual. Jesus coming back to life doesn’t happen because we feel it, it happened as an historical event. What that means on a day-to-day basis is that regardless of what is going on in our lives, because Jesus rose from the dead:
1. God exists. We know who he is and he loves us more than we can ever imagine.
2. There is life after death and because of Jesus’ death on the cross for our sins, we can live that life with him forever.
3. Our life right now, regardless of our circumstances, has meaning, purpose and value because the God who created and sustains our universe is actively involved in our lives.
Your life is worth living whether you feel it is or not. If you aren’t sure about that, think about the resurrection. Ask questions you might have. Give yourself the opportunity to move from a life controlled by emotion to the solid rock of the historical resurrection.
