It is human nature to put off addressing the little problems in life. But those problems never go away and often become more and more serious the longer they are ignored until finally they scream for our attention. The odd thing is that our reaction is one of complete surprise. We wonder, “How did this happen?” when the issue had been slowly growing right in front of our eyes. But to us, it was a “little thing”, so we ignored it.
There is a story about a school custodian who retired after forty years of service at the same school. The day after he retired the foundation of the school building collapsed. An investigation discovered that every single day during those forty years, the custodian had removed one brick from the school foundation which he used for home projects. One brick a day. Doesn’t seem like much. But over time, the little things matter.
When it comes to our relationship with God, it’s even more important to pay attention to the details of our daily walk with him. This Sunday we’re going to study the life of a king of Israel named Saul. He started off so well and ended so miserably. Surprisingly, it wasn’t one major character flaw which led him away from God, it was an ongoing series of little things – behaviors and attitudes which often go unnoticed but can result in destroying a believer’s faith. Join us for our Sunday morning worship. We can all benefit from an honest reevaluation of the little things in our lives.
