“You’ve got to stick to something!” she screamed. You can’t just keep bouncing from one thing to the other. Life isn’t a game of pinball.”
In a low voice he mumbled, “I guess I just get sort of bored with everything.”
It’s pretty easy to slide into a pinball lifestyle today. There are so many options and alternatives, so much that catches our attention and stirs our passions. Life can be like a Saturday at Costco going from one food sample booth to another, filling our stomachs with a little bit of everything. That might work with satisfying our hunger, but it fails miserably when it comes to meeting the needs of our minds, hearts and souls.
We all feel an inner conviction that life is meant to be more than just going from one pleasant experience to another, making ourselves feel good. But we have been bombarded since birth with the idea that there is no such thing as unchanging truth, so we just have to figure out for ourselves what life is about.
The theme of the sermon this Sunday is “Life by the Book”. It’s based on a man named Josiah who discovered what the Bible can mean to our lives, that it can give solid reference points to a life not only well lived for the moment, but a life well lived in eternity.
The Bible has been accused of containing teachings and principles which are intolerant and narrow minded. But it has never been described as vague and open-ended. It very clearly provides a specific plan for human life. The key question everyone must answer is, “Is what the Bible teaches true?”
If you feel like the man at the beginning of this article, just a little bit bored with everything, join us for our worship service this Sunday. You may find living life by the Book is more exciting than you imagined.
