The Heart of Love

The Heart of Love

Love is the answer to all the world’s problems. Most people agree on that. The difficulty begins with defining what love is and then getting people to demonstrate love on a daily basis. We don’t like to admit it, but most of our love is related to our feelings which depend on somebody else doing something we enjoy. So much of what is called love between men and women is really the sexual satisfaction enjoyed by the couple. Love in families is very much based on each person behaving in such a way that other family members benefit from their actions. Probably the most common example of our self-centered love is what happens when people we say we love do things we don’t like! That’s when people start saying, “I’ve lost that loving feeling!”

If love is going to significantly change human lives, it’s got to go beyond feelings. It has to be a commitment to something or someone bigger than ourselves. And that is exactly the Christian definition of love. Jesus Christ made it clear that love is the determination to do what is best for the other person, regardless of one’s own personal feelings. Now that kind of thinking is crazy, unless Jesus is the risen Son of God, Savior of all people and Lord over all time and creation. The great theme of Christianity is that God loved us first through what Christ did for us on the cross and now we are able to love other people (even if that love is imperfect) the way he loved us.

It could be on this Mother’s Day weekend you’re having a little trouble getting excited about all the talk about love because you just don’t feel that emotion. That’s okay. Join us for our Sunday morning worship. The good news is you don’t have to feel it to show the most powerful love on earth – the love of Christ.
