The Man Who Loved Light

The Man Who Loved Light

There is a story of a man who was somewhat of a recluse. Over the years he lost touch with friends and family, isolating himself in a small apartment, keeping the windows closed and covered at all times. The man spent most of his days in the dark, seated at a table, staring into the flame of a single candle, muttering, “The light, the beautiful light!”

One day a close relative who had searched for the man finally found his rented room. Entering the door he fairly shouted, “What are you doing in the dark, man?” His question was answered with the familiar words,

“The light, the beautiful light!”

To which the relative exclaimed, “Light?!?!? You want light? This is light!” And he began to open all the windows in the apartment, letting the brilliant rays of the noonday sun pour over the man, almost extinguishing the light from the little candle.

In many ways some of us live like the man fascinated by the candle. We are enthralled by pleasure, power, fame and feelings to the point we close ourselves in with the here and now, isolating our lives from the eternal, all powerful God who made us. We’re content with our fleeting flickering passions, forgetting the ocean of God’s goodness for which he created us.

At Christmas, we celebrate the coming of God into this world to shatter the darkness of our small thinking with the light of Jesus Christ. If it is time to open the windows of your heart and mind to a more powerful and satisfying light, join us for our Sunday morning worship service.
