The Myth: “They Lived Happily Ever After”

The Myth: “They Lived Happily Ever After”

We’ve been sold a lie. It’s a lie that appears to be harmless, but it infects and corrupts our every attempt at happiness. Poem after poem, song after song, novel after novel, and film after film feed our belief that if we just get our lives together, we can live “happily ever after”. We can have a life with few or no problems. A life which just gets better day after day after day. But it never happens. And when we begin to realize our “happily ever after” dream is never going to come true, that we must accept pleasure and pain, happiness and sadness, success and suffering, we are decimated.

Living in a world in which everyone gets hurt at some time or another is depressing. It is not a matter of “if” we are going to have our world turned upside down, but only “when”. To make our situation even more complicated, we look at other peoples’ lives and naively imagine that they are living the “happily ever after” life.

The Bible is shockingly blunt about the problems all human beings will experience in this life. It realistically portrays the pain and suffering humanity has endured throughout history. But more than a tragic portrayal of the human condition, the story of the Bible is the account of God’s commitment to give people the chance to truly and perfectly “live happily ever after” despite the present suffering we experience in the present.

If you find yourself frequently asking the question, “Why can’t I be happier more often?” maybe it’s time to consider a change in how you see life. Jesus won’t give you happiness on your terms, he’ll give you something much better. Join us for our Sunday morning worship service. God’s version of “living happily ever” after blows away any ideas we could come up with.
