In a futuristic novel written in the mid-1930s the author, through his main character, identified all the fallacies and shortcomings of the self-professed “Save the World” philosophies and personalities of that time. At the end of the lament the character defiantly shouts, “They are all wrong – THERE IS NO SOLUTION TO THE WORLD’S PROBLEMS!” That kind of thinking sounds hopeless, but it is, in a very real sense, right on.
Life as we know it has been life for thousands of years and will continue to be similar for thousands of years to come. People will be born and die. We will have good times and bad times. We’ll love and hate, get along and make war, be happy and be sad. That’s just the way it is and no movement or popular figure will ever change that reality. But that’s not news to anybody. Deep down we all kind of have that realization. And Jesus Christ came right out and said, “In this world you are going to have trouble.”
So, are we left to helplessly wander our way through a hopeless existence only to expire and become extinct? Fortunately not, because the same Jesus who said we will have trouble in this life also said, “But take heart, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
The most important decision a human being has to make is to determine whether the life we are living is all there is, that our existence is “one and done”…or if there is a life after death. Jesus Christ emphatically and enthusiastically affirmed there is and his resurrection from the dead is strong evidence he is right! But Jesus talked about much more than eternity. He also said a whole lot about how human beings are to live as they prepare for forever. And that’s “The Solution” to the hopelessness of the “No Solution” thinking permeating our world.
